About David Sobey
In 1950, both David and Faye were students at Dalhousie University, and it was then that David met Faye Naugle, the woman who would become his lifelong companion and wife. David enjoyed his job nearly as much as he enjoyed spending time with his family and in nature. David’s favorite thing in the world was to take his loved ones on adventures in the great outdoors, whether it was taking them sailing on the Northumberland Strait, skiing down the hills at Wentworth, golfing at the Abercrombie Golf Club, or patiently standing in hip waders on the St. Mary’s River. David liked all of these activities immensely.
David, much like his older brothers Bill and Donald before him, began his career in the grocery store industry when he was still a little lad. David was able to learn the ropes of his family’s fast expanding Stellarton grocery shop by doing just about everything in the store, from sprouting potatoes in the cellar to delivering groceries with his mother.
David’s lifelong fascination with the grocery industry was spurred by his early introduction to the industry through his family’s involvement in the business. Throughout the course of his career, he has held a number of positions of increasing significance, including the roles of Chief Executive Officer of Sobeys Inc. (1986–1995) and Chairman of the Board (1995–2001). Following his retirement in 2001, the Board of Directors of Sobeys Inc. conferred upon him the title of Chair Emeritus, and he remained to serve on the Board of Directors of Empire Company Limited until 2015.
David may have been removed from day-to-day operations, but he never completely left the firm; he just continued working out of the company’s headquarters in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. It was important to him to provide the best possible service to the customers, therefore he made frequent travels to the stores to check on inventory, monitor working conditions, and engage in business-related conversation.
