David Breaux Death -The stabbing victim at Davis, California’s Central Park was identified as David Breaux by the city of Davis. Breaux, 50, is a well-known neighborhood resident who has spent at least the past ten years hanging out around Central Park and the downtown area on a regular basis. He is widely referred to as the “Compassion Guy” in the community, which is a fitting tribute to his frequent encounters with everyone who passed him by. He frequently waves and greets people or inquires about their perspectives on compassion.
What happened to David Breaux?
The Davis Police report that at 11:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2023, officers were called to a welfare check for a “unresponsive male.” According to the preliminary inquiry, the victim sustained many stab wounds in what was a very brutal attack. A number of Davis Police Department officers spent the entire day processing the site, and they will continue to zealously look into this ostensibly senseless act.
There are no suspect leads at this time, according to the police, but they promised to keep the community informed as soon as more information becomes available. A visible public safety presence will be maintained through the deployment of additional police on foot and bicycle patrol in the Central Park and downtown corridor areas due to the violent nature of this attack.

David Breaux was a Stanford University graduate who helped organize the Compassion Bench in 2013 near the intersection of Third and C Streets. He also released a book of anonymously collected community people’ thoughts on the topic. He was loved and cherished within his community.

Soroptimist International of Davis wrote “We are saddened to learn about the stabbing death of David H. Breaux, who spoke to our club in February 2014 about his Compassion Project. He had a Ph.D. from Stanford and dedicated his life’s work to the study of compassion, erecting the Compassion bench at the corner of Third and C streets in downtown Davis. The irony of his murder is unbelievable. May he rest in peace.”
There will be a vigil for David, whose death is being investigated as a homicide, hosted by the Davis Phoenix Coalition on Sunday 4/30 at Compassion Corner (3rd & C St.) at 7:30 pm. People who are able to attend are all encourage and pay their respects.
David Breaux’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family at a later date.
