Earlier reports said that officers were dispatched to a residence located on Dupont Avenue North early on Saturday morning. The caller reported that a gun went off during the struggle that was going on.
Victim identified
A young woman, later identified as Pope, who was 18 years old and suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen that was potentially lethal was found by the police. She was in a critical condition. The injuries sustained by the 13-year-old boy who was also struck were not considered to be life-threatening. According to the statement that was released by the Chief of Police in the city of Minneapolis, Brian O’Hara, “We believe there was only one gunshot, [that went] through-and-through the 18-year-old female, then striking the 13-year-old,”. Suspect identified
The investigation has led authorities to think that a mother was arguing with her two children before the incident that resulted in a firearm being fired. After the incident, authorities detained the mother, identified as Ashley Pope, who is 39 years old. According to the data from the jail, she has been released since her arrest. Investigators were successful in extracting a weapon from within the property they were investigating. At the time of the shooting, there were three additional children living in the house, and plans have been made to place them in the care of different individuals. This death in Minneapolis is being investigated as a probable homicide, making it the 11th fatality that has happened in the city so far in this year.
