About Clive Barker
In 1996, under his direction, the South African national side won the African Nations Cup for the only time in their history. After making his debut at the age of 17, he went on to have a successful career as a professional footballer in the 1960s, playing for both Durban City and Durban United. He was offered a tryout with Leicester City, but a devastating knee injury cut short his career very soon after it had begun. In the 1970s, he began his career as a manager, coaching a number of clubs in South Africa.
Some of these clubs include Durban City, Manning Rangers, AmaZulu (Zulu Royals), and Santos Cape Town. His nickname is “The Dog.” During his time with his team, he was victorious in both the league championship and the league cup on two separate occasions. In the history of the South African league, he was one of the first white managers to ever work there.
1994 was the year when he was promoted to the position of manager of the South African national football team, which had previously been suspended due to a ban imposed because of apartheid. In 1996, he led the South African national team to their first and only triumph at the African Nations Cup, which they achieved by defeating Tunisia by a score of 2-0 in the championship game. It was under his direction that South Africa qualified for the World Cup for the very first time, which took place in France in 1998.
After the squad’s disappointing performance at the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup, he announced his retirement in December 1997, leaving the team without a chance to compete in the World Cup finals. During the World Cup in 2010, Barker worked as a television analyst for a local station.
