Gardner is the son of Bettye Jean Gardner and Thomas Turner, and was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Gardner’s parents divorced when he was young, and he had a difficult time growing up with a physically abusive father and a mother who was sent to prison — Gardner and his siblings were frequently moved from one foster home to the next.
Gardner enlisted in the US Navy after graduating from high school and was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Dr. Robert Ellis was someone he met while serving in the Navy. After serving in the Navy, he decided to work as a research assistant for Ellis, pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor. Gardner assisted Ellis in managing his research laboratory and even assisted in the authoring of several of his published articles from 1974 to 1976, but he was compelled to leave due to the low remuneration.
Gardner was compelled to become a medical equipment salesperson to make ends meet due to family problems and a lack of income after working at a research laboratory. However, he met stockbroker Bob Bridges at a sales meeting, and his life was forever transformed. Gardner was able to schedule meetings with several of Bridges’ pals in several major brokerage firms after a conversation over a Ferrari.
Gardner was supposed to train under E. F. Hutton, but it didn’t work out. Fortunately, he was offered a second shot with Dean Witter Reynolds and admitted into their training program. Despite the fact that the training was unpaid, he persevered and passed his Series 7 Exam.
Gardner got a job with Bear Stearns & Company after working for Reynolds, and his fortune began to rise from there. Gardner persevered despite personal challenges such as homelessness, and by 1987 had amassed enough assets to open his own brokerage firm, Gardner Rich & Co.
Gardner was able to build his own corporation from a small desk in his home in Chicago, Illinois, and in 2006, he was able to sell the entire company for millions of dollars, greatly increasing his net worth. Later, he co-founded Christopher Gardner International Holdings, a new company he co-founded.
Gardner is a philanthropist as well as a businessman, with ambitions to invest in South Africa to provide opportunities and jobs for the local people. He is also a member of the National Fatherhood Initiative and the National Education Foundation’s boards of directors.
In 2006, he published “The Pursuit of Happyness,” which was eventually adapted into a film starring Will Smith as his character. He published “Start Where You Are: Life Lessons in Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be” in 2009.
He is continuously active in his enterprises, philanthropic endeavors, and as a motivational speaker today. Gardner is the father of two children from a prior relationship with Jackie Medina, Chris Jr. and Jacinta. From 1977 to 1986, he was married to Sherry Dyson.
