The Colorado Department of Corrections reports that one of the two parole officers who were struck by a vehicle driven by a wanted suspect on Thursday in Colorado Springs has died from their injuries. After the fatal hit-and-run occurred on Thursday about 4 p.m., police held a press conference to announce the Christine Sandoval’s death. After the murder of DOC Director Tom Clements in his home in 2013, this was the first time a corrections officer had been killed on the job.
A “Blue Alert Activation” was issued by the CBI at 6 p.m. on Thursday regarding a suspect, identified as Justin Kula, who was last seen in a charcoal gray 2015 Lexus RX330 with Colorado license plate CDA346. At about 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, police in downtown Colorado Springs, near North Spruce and West Bijou Streets, took Kula into custody after he allegedly hit two parole officers with his SUV.
The CBI, local law enforcement agencies, and public and commercial television and radio broadcasters in the state work together as part of the Blue Alert Program to warn the public about the impending danger posed by a suspect(s) who has killed or seriously injured a peace officer. The “Blue Alert” was cancelled at 8 o’clock that evening after police discovered the suspect and the vehicle he was driving.
A funeral march was organized in Colorado Springs for the murdered officer, Christine Sandoval. In addition to domestic abuse, harassment, drug possession, and protection order violations, Kula has been charged with second-degree assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and parole violations.
