Christian didn’t start playing football until he was 23 years old and in college, when he was a track and field athlete at Azusa Pacific University in California. He believed football was uninteresting at first, but his college mates persuaded him to keep playing, and his talent led to his selection as the 35th overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Christian played in 12 games his first season, rushing for 660 yards on 157 runs, and only nine games the next season due to a broken thumb, but rushed for 473 yards on 105 carries. His next season was his best, with 1,480 yards on 370 carries and 12 touchdowns. Since then, his game statistics have deteriorated as a result of a knee injury that caused him to quit. He had a 1,000-yard rushing season in 1991, rushing for 1,031 yards and scoring nine touchdowns.
