According to local sources, a man believed to be Mr Cleave was threatened earlier this month, along with two other individuals, in a so-called narcomanta, a statement put on a fabric banner by a local drug cartel.
The well-known 54-year-old businessman was a real estate agent in Cancun. He originally resided in Truro.
Mr Cleave was travelling through Playa del Carmen in a red Audi when he was approached by two men on motorcycles, according to the DailyMail.
