Chris Cannon, a former representative from Utah who had served in Congress for two decades, passed away.
The news that Cannon passed away on Wednesday at the age of 73 was confirmed by his brother to the Deseret News, as reported by KSL.com.
Cannon was a lawyer, business owner, and venture capitalist who would eventually become a millionaire. He was also a venture capitalist. From 1997 until 2009, he served as the representative for Utah’s Third Congressional District. In his first election, Cannon was victorious over the incumbent Democratic representative, Bill Orton, who had previously served in the position for three terms before being beaten by Cannon.
In the year 1999, Cannon was a member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law. During that time, he was one of thirteen House managers who were responsible for prosecuting the case against then-President Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial in the Senate.
On Thursday, as the news of Cannon’s passing went over the world, luminaries such as Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, commented on Social Media that he was “stunned and saddened.”
“I will miss his friendship, his encouragement, and his great insights,” Lee wrote on his post. “As those of us who knew him struggle to come to terms with this devastating news, Sharon and I mourn alongside his wife, Claudia, as well as the couple’s children and extended family. All of these individuals are in our prayers.”
Both Governor Spencer Cox and First Lady Abby Cox expressed their “saddened” reaction upon learning of Cannon’s passing, as stated by Governor Cox.
“Congressman Cannon was a dedicated public servant who worked on criminal justice, drug policy, regulatory reform, and other issues during his time in the House of Representatives,” Cox wrote in a post. “He worked hard for the people of Utah and was a dedicated public servant.” During this trying time, we want his family and loved ones to know that our thoughts and prayers are sent their way.
Also expressing his condolences was Jason Chaffetz, a former representative from Utah who is now a commentator for Fox News.
“May God bless” “I hope that we can all express our gratitude to him for the courageous and patriotic work that he has done fighting for the United States of America,” Chaffetz wrote in his post. I pray that God keeps his family in his prayers.
