An officer-involved gunshot that resulted in death on February 28th, 2023, is being looked into by the Virginia State Police. An Albermarle County Police Department (ACPD) detective saw and approached a wanted person in Charlottesville around 10:05 a.m. on Tuesday. After firing several rounds of ammunition, the person, later identified as 44-year-old Billy Sites, is said to have fled on foot to a forested area on Emmet St., close to the 250 bypasses.
Authorities instructed locals to remain put as they set up a cordon around the area. Sites then sprinted out from the forested area into a busy parking lot. Less violent methods were tried, but Sites is believed to have pointed a gun at the officers, compelling them to start firing. Billy Sites, 44, was brought to UVA Medical Center where he passed away as a result of his wounds.
Although this is an ongoing investigation, ACPD and the Charlottesville Police Department are fully collaborating with the Virginia State Police. Call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (434) 977-4000 if you have any information.
