UPDATE: Before 6 o’clock in the evening, troop A of the Louisiana State Police began investigating a fatal collision on LA Highway 1 at its intersection with LA Highway 943 in Ascension Parish. Charidy Dunbar, a 17-year-old from Gonzalez, was killed in the collision. The preliminary investigation revealed that the collision occurred as Dunbar’s 2022 Nissan Sentra was traveling west on LA Hwy 943.
The Nissan failed to halt at the stop sign as it approached the intersection of LA Hwy 943 and LA Hwy 1 for reasons that are still under investigation. Simultaneously, a 2015 Porsche Macan was approaching the intersection of LA Hwy 1 and LA Hwy 943 while traveling northbound on LA Hwy 1. The Nissan drove directly into the Porsche’s path. The Porsche collided with the front of the Nissan. Following the initial collision, the Nissan left the roadway and overturned. At that moment, a 2006 Toyota Highlander was preparing to turn left onto LA Hwy 943 while traveling southbound on LA Hwy 1. After colliding with the Nissan, the Porsche then collided with the Toyota.
As a consequence of not being restrained, Dunbar sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Dunbar was declared dead at the site. Also unrestrained and suffering moderate injuries was a child passenger in the Nissan. The child was transferred to a nearby facility. Drivers of both the Porsche and Toyota, as well as a passenger in the Toyota, were appropriately restrained and escaped the collision unharmed. As part of the ongoing investigation, all drivers provided routine toxicology samples for analysis. This incident is still under investigation.
Charidy Dunbar Death – Charidy Dunbar of Baton Rouge, LA passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023 in a car accident. She was 17 years old. Shamika Cushenberry Carter, a East Iberville High School graduate wrote on Facebook that she may not talk to her cousins everyday, but their kids did have a bond, that she did not know they had. Carter wrote on Facebook that For Kin to be crying is really hurts her and she hate that everyone has to go through this hard time right now. “Lord, please give all our families strength and comfort in this time of need,” Shamika Cushenberry Carter wrote.
