Two high school cheerleaders were killed this weekend during a police chase that turned tragic, leaving a community in mourning. As a result, one officer was prosecuted. Maggie Dunn, 17, and Caroline Gill, 15, both cheerleaders at Brusly High School in Louisiana and students, were killed in the collision, which authorities claim happened during a Saturday night high-speed pursuit of a suspect in a home invasion.
Liam Dunn, Maggie’s brother, was also in the vehicle when it crashed and is currently in critical condition. Officer David Cauthron, 42, of the Addis Police Department, was detained on Sunday and charged with two charges of reckless homicide and one count of reckless injury.
As of Monday afternoon, Cauthron was still being held, per the booking papers. It was unclear if Cauthron had retained counsel who could make statements on his behalf. The officer is currently on administrative leave and, according to district attorney Tony Clayton, “has a lot of questions to answer pertaining to his speed and sheer negligence.”
Authorities claim that while pursuing 24-year-old Tyquel Zanders, the officer struck the car carrying the teenagers. According to the outlet, he was detained after his car stalled and was later charged with house invasion, vehicle theft, and aggravated escape. It was unclear right away if he had hired legal counsel to speak on his behalf.
