Caleb Gillis Death – On Thursday 25th May 2023, Glace Bay High School alumnus Caleb Gillis has sadly passed away. He died in a tragic car accident at the age of 19 leaving family and friends heartbroken. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to information released, at about 4:40 p.m., members of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service, the Northeast RCMP Traffic Services – Cape Breton, as well as the fire and emergency medical services, responded to a complaint of a vehicle collision on Highway 4 in Ben Eoin.
How did the accident happen?
Officers with the RCMP discovered that a grey Volkswagen Jetta had been driving on Highway 4 when it veered off the roadway, collided with a power pole, and finally came to a stop in the ditch. At the site, it was determined that the driver, a 19-year-old man from Lingan, had passed away. At the time of the collision, there were two people riding along in the automobile with the driver. The first victim, a female resident of Grand Mira with the age of 21 who had received significant injuries, was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The second victim, a man from Glace Bay who is 20 years old and had injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, was also taken to the hospital by ambulance. The inquiry is still going on, and there was a collision reconstructionist who went to the spot. Highway 4 was shut down for a number of hours but is again back available to traffic.

Caleb’s goal in life was to bring a smile to the faces of others, and he regularly put the needs of others ahead of his own. Caleb was known for his generosity toward all people, his ability to act as a peacemaker within his own family, and his ferociousness in the defense of those he held dear. Caleb had the kindest and most generous heart of anyone we had ever met. Caleb has spent the most recent several years of his career working for Safety First as a Traffic Control Protector.
Caleb is predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Jessie McKenzie, who was always there with encouragement and guidance in all of his endeavors. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, May 30 at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Lilly MacDonald presiding. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK, Halifax.
