Nothing less than 60 people were killed and many injured in an explosion that rocked an informal gold mine site in southwest Burkina Faso. The tragedy happened on Monday, injuring more several people.
The possible cause of the explosion which happened in Poni province has not been learned.
CNN reported that “Images showed a large blast site of felled trees and destroyed tin houses. Bodies lay on the ground, covered in mats.”
Burkina is known for housing lots of gold mine in Africa and these mines are majorly ran by international companies. The country is also under attack from Islamist groups affiliated to Qaeda and I.S. who aimed at taking control of the mining sites in order to generate revenues for their activities.
There are hundreds of smaller, informal sites that operate without oversight or regulation in Burkina Faso.
