Who was Bryan Marchment?
Bryan William Marchment was a defenceman for the Canadian national ice hockey team. During his time in the National Hockey League (NHL), he played for the Winnipeg Jets, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Hartford Whalers, the Edmonton Oilers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the San Jose Sharks, the Colorado Avalanche, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Calgary Flames. He was born on 1 May 1969, in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada.
“Heartbreaking to hear of the passing of Bryan Marchment. Always a fierce competitor but an even better guy off the ice. Sending my love and condolences to his family. Rest In Peace.” Doug Gilmour said.
Bryan Marchment Playing career
Marchment was a member of the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League when he first began his professional playing career. Marchment was a high-scoring defenseman who was more well known for his assists. He had 51 assists in 56 games during the 1987–88 season, which was the year he was drafted 16th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.
Despite having a bright future, Marchment spent the majority of his Jets career playing in the American Hockey League for the Moncton Hawks. However, he did get some moments in a Jets jersey as well, playing 28 games in 1990– On July 22, 1991, the Jets dealt Marchment and Chris Norton to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Troy Murray and Warren Rychel. Marchment joined Chris Norton in Chicago. Marchment played more games for the Blackhawks and scored 15 points in the 1991–92 NHL season and 20 points in the following season.
However, on November 2, 1993, Marchment and Steve Larmer were traded to the Hartford Whalers in exchange for Eric Weinrich and Patrick Poulin. Marchment went on to play for the Whalers for the rest of his career. Before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers on August 30, 1994, Marchment only appeared in 42 games for the Whalers. This move was a kind of compensation for Hartford’s decision to sign Steven Rice.
Marchment spent his first three seasons with the Oilers before being sent to the Lightning along with Jason Bonsignore and Steve Kelly on December 30, 1997. In exchange for Roman Hamrlik and Paul Comrie, the Lightning received Marchment, Jason Bonsignore, and Steve Kelly. Marchment was playing in the 1997 season when he had a severe head injury and began convulsing on the ice as a result of it. Only 22 games were played by Marchment with the Lightning before he was dealt once more, this time to the San Jose Sharks on March 24, 1998, along with David Shaw and a first-round draft pick (David Legwand), for Andrei Nazarov and a first-round draft pick (Vincent Lecavalier).
The obituary will be released by the family.
