Multiple personnel with the Boston Fire Department are on the scene of a reported manhole explosion today Tuesday, July 12th, 2022. According to the department, the incident was reported in the area of 37 Bowdoin St in the downtown area of Boston. The Boston Police and Boston Fire Department are on the scene where they say two Eversource MA workers have been transported to an area hospital with burn injuries.
The two unidentified Eversource MA workers were taken to the Mass General Hospital in unknown conditions. The Beacon Hill district of Boston experienced a transformer explosion, injuring two workers, according to the Boston Fire Department. Fire authorities reported the explosion happened Tuesday evening across from 37 Bowdoin St., which is the address for Grotto restaurant. “Two workers just doing their job and they were harmed performing their job. It’s quite unfortunate, so, hopefully, they’re alright,” said Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke.
Boston police said at least one of those workers received significant, maybe life-threatening injuries. “At this time, our focus is on our employees’ well-being and making sure they receive the medical treatment and assistance they need,” says a statement from Eversource. Witnesses stated they heard up to a dozen explosions that were powerful enough to shake adjacent buildings.
An Eversource representative said the firm did have a staff performing normal maintenance on a piece of underground equipment in the region. Authorities evacuated apartments nearby as firefighters quenched the fires, but explosions continued until Eversource was able to isolate the issue and turned off the electricity. Burke claimed it was a perilous job when considering the enormous voltage pumping into the region.
