Bobby Smallwood Shooting Investigations – One security officer was killed after gunfire erupted inside Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Northwest Portland on Saturday morning. After hours of searching for the gunman, the suspect was shot and killed by an officer in Gresham. Shots were discharged around 11 a.m. on the fifth floor of the Irving Center near the hospital’s birthing unit, according to PPB Sgt. Kevin Allen. Officers reacted as if it were a situation involving an active assailant despite the fact that they lacked information to that effect, he said.
The unidentified suspect fled the hospital, resulting in “every available officer” endeavoring to locate the shooter. At first, it was believed that the shooter escaped to Fred Meyer near Providence Park. However, after a prolonged search, police were “confident that there is no threat at that store,” Allen stated around 2:00 p.m. The suspect was observed in a vehicle at NE 181st and Everett around noon. A patrol car from the East precinct attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle.
“After responding to the hospital, the Special Emergency Response Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene in Gresham. Allen stated that Gresham police and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the site. During that encounter, police discharged their weapons, killing the suspect. Three Portland police officers were armed during this incident, according to authorities. No other responding agencies were involved in the gunfire at the scene.
East County Major Crimes Team is spearheading the investigation into the officer-involved homicide. Anyone with information should contact the Gresham police department. At this stage in the investigation, the shooter’s motivation is unknown, but Allen said detectives are working diligently to determine it. The victim who passed away in the incident was identified as Bobby Smallwood, a security officer at the hospital. Smallwood was initially treated at Legacy Good Samaritan and then transferred to a trauma center. Allen stated that despite efforts to save the security guard’s life, he died at the trauma center.
An additional staff member who was injured in the incident is in stable condition, according to Legacy officials. They added that no patients had been hurt. CEO and president of Legacy Health, Kathryn Correia, stated that “words cannot express the profound grief we are experiencing.” “We offer our unwavering support to Bobby’s loved ones, our patients under our care, the staff at Legacy Good Samaritan, and all of our employees and providers who are suffering today.” The hospital, which went into lockdown immediately following the murder, had its shelter-in-place order lifted around 5:00 p.m.
The investigation into the homicide continues at the hospital, where numerous witnesses and staff members have already been interviewed. Allen stated that there has been a “tremendous amount of coordination” between police and hospital officials. The investigation is still ongoing. If you have any information, please contact the Portland Police Department and reference case number 23-19230. The deadly incident remains under investigations.
