The victim of Saturday’s tragic cliff fall has been identified as 19-year-old Benny Schurmer, a student at Santa Barbara City College. The incident occurred at approximately 10:53 p.m. in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive. Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Scott Safechuck reported that fellow students attempted to resuscitate Benny Schurmer after he was found in the water roughly 40 feet below the cliff’s edge.
Despite their valiant efforts, tragically, they were unable to save him. This incident marks the eighth fatal cliff fall in the past two decades in an area known for erosion. The location of the fall has been recognized as particularly prone to such accidents.
