Baxter was recognized as one of the most influential traditional music heroes and symbols in Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador for a number of decades. He was born and raised in the province. Who was Baxter Wareham?
Baxter Wareham was born and raised in the neighborhood of Hr. Buffett, which is situated on Long Island and was refounded in the late 1960s. The neighborhood was named after Baxter’s grandfather. In the past, Baxter participated in the music scene as a member of a few distinct bands, such as Bristol’s Hope, the Wareham Brothers, and the Breakwater Boys. In addition to that, he did a lot of touring and played with a well-known fiddler by the name of Rufus Guinchard. Baxter spent the better part of three decades as an educator in the secondary school setting.
Following his retirement from the teaching profession, he took a job as the captain of a pilot boat operating out of Arnold’s Cove, which is also the location of his current home. John Drakes wrote a heartfelt tribute on Facebook to Baxter. The post says; ‘Baxter Wareham, another great musician/songwriter gone too soon. One of his beautiful songs he wrote was Towards the Sunset. He added saying, ‘Condolences to his family…R.I.P.’
