Barbara Levy Boxer was born to Jewish parents Ira and Sophie Levy in New York City. She attended public schools and graduated from George W. Wingate High School in 1958. Barbara earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from Brooklyn College four years later. Boxer worked as a stockbroker and journalist for the Pacific Sun before being elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors in 1976, making her the first woman to hold that position.
Boxer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1982, succeeding John Burton, and served as the representative for California District 6 until 1993. Barbara also served on the Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, which was established in 1983 by Congress. She opposes marijuana policy reform, but she favors same-sex marriage and voted against Proposition 8, a California constitutional amendment that prohibits same-sex marriage. Boxer has previously chastised former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for her views on the Iraq War and has recently endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.
