Jacob Derbin Death, 23-year-old Ohio officer killed in shooting, Authorities find suspect dead: Authorities described the shooting incident that occurred on Saturday night as a “ambush” by an alleged gunman who was discovered dead on Sunday, killing an Ohio police officer who was checking a report of a disturbance at a home, ABC News said.
The incident occurred in a residential area of Euclid, Ohio, just before 10 p.m. local time, roughly 15 miles northeast of Cleveland, according to a statement from Capt. Mitchell Houser, a spokesman for the Euclid Police Department. According to Houser, police were called to a home in order to look into a disturbance. “While police were investigating, a gunman ambushed an officer, striking him with gunfire,” Houser stated. After being transported to a nearby hospital, the gravely injured cop was declared dead, according to Houser. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has identified the deceased officer as 23-year-old Jacob Derbin.
“Our officers’ blood is used to sign the pledge of protection. In a statement released on Sunday, Yost declared, “The murderer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice.” “That a mother lost her kid on Mother’s Day and that this murder occurred right as we were getting ready to honor our fallen during Police Memorial Week is a bitter irony. The injustice, for both the Euclid Police Department and the family of this young officer, makes my heart boil with rage.”
Police added that they had started looking for the culprit, who they believed to be 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, but they later discovered him dead in a Shaker Heights, Ohio, residence on Sunday afternoon. Investigations are ongoing to determine the shooting’s motivation. Shortly after three Atlanta police officers were wounded on Saturday night while attending to a call, authorities said, there was another shooting. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated at a press conference that the officers were shot after being summoned to look into a complaint of a guy carrying a pistol.
Shots were fired when the unidentified cops came upon the suspect, who was purportedly carrying a knife and a handgun, according to Schierbaum. As they attempted to serve active felony warrants on a suspect, identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr., a gun battle resulted in the deaths of four members of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the wounding of four others in Charlotte, North Carolina, on April 29, according to police.
As of now this year, at least 58 police enforcement officers have died while performing their duties; of them, 22 were murdered by gunfire. This information is provided by the nonprofit Officer Down Memorial Page. Almost 40% fewer federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel died while performing their duties in 2023 than there were in 2022 (224 officers versus 136 in 2023).
