William Lawson, the founding pastor of Houston Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, with heavy hearts. He was ninety-five years old. In 1962, Rev. Lawson and his spouse, Audrey Hoffman Lawson, founded The Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.
After retiring in 2004, Lawson was given the title of Founding Pastor Emeritus. “We announce the passing of our Founding Pastor, Reverend William A. Lawson on May 14, 2024 with both inexpressible sorrow and overwhelming gratitude,” said the post on Wheeler Church’s official Instagram page. After serving his earthly mission, he is now at peace and will never die.
Reverend Lawson has been a preacher, professor, leader in the civil rights movement, and a husband, parent, grandpa, and great grandpa during the course of his nearly 96 years of life.
