Garda interrogated two men in relation to the fatal stabbing of a man in the early hours of December 26. One of the men detained is well-known to garda in the north inner city of Dublin for his involvement in gangland crime. Recently, he was detained in connection with a fatal shooting in the capital. Barry Maguire (23), of the Deerpark estate in Ashbourne, County Meath, was stabbed to death on December 26 during an altercation between two parties of men in the Milltown estate in Ashbourne, County Meath. A second man wounded in the conflict survived the assault. As he fled the scene and attempted to call an ambulance for his injured companion, he was stabbed.
Maguire was discovered prostrate when garda arrived at 4 a.m. to investigate a disturbance. Shortly after being transported to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, he succumbed to his injuries. Even though one of the suspects arrested last night is involved in organized crime, there is no evidence that Mr. Maguire’s murder was in any way connected to criminal activity.
The Garda believe that two groups of males met on the street following a party in the Milltown estate and engaged in an altercation in which a knife was produced. According to a reliable Garda source, Mr. Maguire and his companions were simply in the wrong location at the wrong time and had the misfortune of encountering the attackers. State Pathologist Dr. Marie Cassidy’s autopsy revealed that Mr. Maguire perished from a single stab wound.
No one has been prosecuted in connection with Mr. Maguire’s death as of yet. Garda arrested two men in their early 20s. They were apprehended in Ashbourne and Lusk, County Dublin. They were transported to the Garda stations in Balbriggan and Drogheda, where they were still being questioned. One of the men was detained last month by garda investigating the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Anthony Russell at the Ardlea Inn in Artane, Dublin.
He was murdered as a result of a dispute between two rival criminal factions based primarily in Dublin’s Sheriff Street. In the days following the murder of Russell, garda apprehended thirteen individuals. The man arrested last night in connection with the murder of Mr. Maguire was one of those 13. It is believed that he was present at the murder site of Mr. Maguire.
The second individual arrested last night in connection with Mr. Maguire’s murder is also from the north inner city of Dublin.
