A Walmart near 35th and Southern avenues is the scene of an officer-involved shooting that Phoenix police are looking into. According to the Phoenix Police Department, the officer in question was a uniformed off-duty cop working security at Walmart. On Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 11 a.m., the occurrence took place. Police claim that the cop opened fire after spotting a shoplifter in the store’s loss prevention department.
As the worker addressed the suspect, he had a weapon in his hand. The suspect was shot at by the off-duty cop, who missed the target. David Apana, 35, is the man who the police have named as the suspect. Police claimed Apana was in possession of a firearm. Apana pulled out a gun and pointed it at the adjacent cop and the staff of loss prevention during the exchange, according to the police. Apana’s conduct caused the cop to retaliate by firing his weapon. Apana didn’t seem to have been hit.
According to the police, Apana fled back toward the store’s center after the officer fired, ultimately making it outside. Apana was spotted by the responding officers running towards a nearby neighborhood. After establishing a perimeter, police were able to track down Apana and apprehend him. The incident didn’t result in any injuries. Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer and Armed Robbery are just two of the many potential felonies Apana might be charged with after being taken into custody at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Prison.
