Anne Ferrante Death – Anne Agius Ferrante who was 97-year-old passed away yesterday evening. Maltese Parliament member and Malta’s First Woman Nationalist MP has died. She had been the first woman to be elected to Parliament in Malta on a Nationalist Party ticket. After Agatha Barbara, who was elected with the Labour Party and served as Malta’s first female President in 1947, Agius Ferrante was elected in 1980, 33 years after women gained the right to vote.

There was a long, uphill battle through the political system to get there. Her death was mourned by Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, who called her a “trailblazing, formidable powerhouse of integrity.” When Metsola was promoted to her current position in EU politics, she disclosed that the first person she contacted was Agius Ferrante.
Metola posted that “we kept in touch over the years. The very first thing I did when I was elected as the European Parliament’s First Vice-President was to write to her. I thanked her for making the path easier, for enduring so that my generation would not have to, and to promise her that I will play my part in making it easier for those who come after me.”
About Anne Agius Ferrante
Agius Ferrante is her father Philip Pullicino’s daughter. Philip Pullicino was Malta’s public prosecutor between the years 1928 and 1940, and he was the first person to assume the post of Attorney General in 1936. Agius Ferrante was named after her father. She was elected to Parliament in a casual election that was held in December 1980, held on the occasion of the death of former Prime Minister and PN leader Giorgio Borg Olivier, and she remained in Parliament until the general election that was held in 1981.
Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, paid respect to Agius Ferrante, whom she referred to as “trailblazing” and “formidable,” and called her an example to follow.
