On Saturday, May 20 around 12:30 p.m., the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and local first responders were called to the scene of an emergency. According to reports, seven persons from the Moses Lake and Warden areas were rafting down the Cle Elum River close to the Salmon La Sac campground when it was overtaken by tree limbs and submerged risks. The swift current of the river, according to authorities, also posed a threat. People on the raft had to abandon the ship at one time or were thrown overboard.
When the group finally reunited, they learned that one of their 17-year-old companions had gone missing. The drones and Swiftwater Rescue Deputies were sent out by the sheriff’s office to look for the missing teen. Two hours after the initial plea for aid, the rescue crew located the body of the 17-year-old guy. He was discovered drowned after being pinned down by a log. A personal flotation device was also attached to him. A young person in the group sprained his ankle and was brought to the hospital.
The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office recommends extreme caution for anyone venturing out onto the river. When the rivers are high, even the best swimmers can get past. People who accidentally fall into the rivers may quickly succumb to cold water shock.
