Alan Douglas Street Death – Head Nurseryman at Avon Bulbs, Alan Douglas Street has passed away. The news about the death of Alan Street was confirmed in a Facebook post made on the 7th of October 2022 by RHS – Royal Horticultural Society. Alan Street cause of death was not released to the public at the time of this publication. Alan Street was also RHS Malvern Master Grower, gold medallist, and a former Vice Chair of the RHS Bulb Committee. Reports states that Alan played a huge role in the life of the Royal Horticultural Society.
The Royal Horticultural Society, founded in 1804 as the Horticultural Society of London, is the UK’s leading gardening charity. It also supports training for professional and amateur gardeners. Through its five gardens at Wisley (Surrey), Hyde Hall (Essex), Harlow Carr (North Yorkshire), Rosemoor (Devon), and Bridgewater (Greater Manchester), the RHS promotes horticulture. It also hosts flower shows like the Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, Tatton Park Flower Show, and Cardiff Flower Show.
For decades, Alan was Head Nurseryman at Avon Bulbs. Avon Bulbs offer a large selection of flower bulbs including Snowdrops, Tulips, Alliums, Daffodils, Agapanthus and much more for sale online. Reports states that to the point of being an expert in plants, Alan attempted to create and draw the attention of knowledgeable gardeners to some bulbs that were previously unknown by continually applying his knowledge of plants and his empathy for them.
His passions have included historically significant and largely extinct varieties of narcissi, which were widely cultivated before the First World War but vanished during the upheavals of that period. His work has led to a concentration on increasing the production of such plants as Tulipa sprengeri, the range of ornamental Hedychium and Cosmos peucidanifolius, plants that are not readily available ‘in the trade’ but he felt should be more widely known and as a result are now more widely available, according to reports.
According to Avon Bulbs, Alan has written a number of articles for the horticultural press including The RHS Garden magazine.
Alan Douglas Street Obituary will be released by the family.
