**A Brief History Of Tacoma Science and Math Institute**
Tacoma Science and Math Institute is a high school that is open to the public and is a member of the Tacoma Public Schools system. In some circles, it is also referred as by its acronym, Sami. It can be found in Tacoma, Washington, and more specifically in the Metro Parks Tacoma neighborhood. The school offers students in grades 9 through 12 an integrated inquiry-based curriculum that encompasses environmental and marine studies in addition to the arts, science, and mathematics. This curriculum is provided to students in all four academic disciplines.
It works closely with a number of local institutions, including the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium as well as the universities in the surrounding area, to carry out its day-to-day operations. In addition, Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) and Industrial Design Engineering and Art, which are both considered to be Sami’s sister institutions, collaborate with Sami to successfully administer the programs that each of these institutions offers (iDEA).
Sami opened its doors for the first time in the fall of 2009 to a group of first-year students. This marked the institution’s beginning of operations (2013). Because of its rapid expansion, the school was able to provide all four high school grades (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) by the time it reached its current capacity in the year 2012, which was one grade higher than it had been in the previous year. During the 2012-2013 school year, the institution initiated the process of accepting new students into the eighth grade in preparation for the 2017 graduation class.
In the beginning, the school was housed in nine mobile classrooms that were positioned next to the parking area for boat trailers at Point Defiance, in front of the park’s maintenance and greenhouse facilities, to the south of the Tacoma Yacht Club and Anthony’s Diner, and to the west of the Ferry Dock. All of these locations can be found on the Point Defiance park map. The mobile classrooms were moved to Camp Six at Point Defiance during the summer of 2015, which had previously been the site of a logging museum. Camp Six had been used as a location for the museum. The previous location of Sami was discovered during construction at Destination Point Defiance in Tacoma, which is currently in the process of being renovated.
