401 Suicide – On Friday, April 21st, 2023, the “sudden death investigation” that led to the suspension of the westbound express lanes of Highway 401 past Keele Street in Toronto caused the lanes to be closed. Kerry Schmidt, a sergeant of the Ontario Provincial Police, stated that the investigation being conducted by the police was being managed through the 31st Division of the Toronto Police Department, with assistance from the Toronto OPP detachment and their crash reconstruction team.
There is so much speculation on social media that a person jumps to death off the Weston Road bridge into the express lanes but the Ontario Provincial Police are yet to confirm this information. “I was at the timmies by Weston and 401, apparently, somebody jumped off the Weston Rd bridge into the express lanes.” A Twitter user wrote.
“We are dealing with a sudden death investigation that occurred in the area of Weston Road and (Highway) 401,” Schmidt said. There was an immediate lack of information regarding the incident’s specifics. Schmidt reported that the basket weave to the west of Keele Street had closed the westbound fast lanes, but that the collector lanes and the eastbound lanes were still accessible. He stated that he anticipated the express lanes to reopen prior to or at around 5 o’clock in the evening. The area saw significant delays overall.
